Waging Peace: The Global Adventures of a Lifelong Activist

When : Tuesday, November 18, 2014 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM

Where : 1102 South Campus Commons, Building 1

David Hartsough knows how to get in the way. He has used his body to block Navy ships headed for Vietnam and trains loaded with munitions on their way to El Salvador and Nicaragua. He has crossed borders to meet “the enemy” in East Berlin, Castro’s Cuba, and present-day Iran. He has marched with mothers confronting a violent regime in Guatemala and stood with refugees threatened by death squads in the Philippines.

Hartsough’s stories inspire, educate, and encourage readers to find ways to work for a more just and peaceful world. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr., Hartsough has spent his life engaging the power of active nonviolence. He provides a peace activist’s eyewitness account of the Civil Rights and anti–Vietnam War movements as well as nonviolent efforts in the Soviet Union, Kosovo, Palestine, Sri Lanka, and the Philippines. He shows how this struggle is waged all over the world by ordinary people committed to ending the spiral of violence and war.

Access to educational and professional training opportunities is essential to strengthening local and global economies and to raising the standard of living for communities around the world. One approach to providing educational opportunities to individuals from developing nations is international exchange and enrollment in educational programs in developed nations. The Institute of International Education (IIE), which facilitates the Fulbright Program among many others, is one of the premier U.S.-based organizations working on programs designed to spark international development through international exchange.

In this free public seminar, Rachael Fellabaum will share key points about IIE’s approach to international exchange for international development, drawing on her experiences facilitating the USAID PRESTASI Scholarship for Indonesian professionals to demonstrate the potential of international exchange and education to enhance international development. She will also share her own story of professional development, and give advice for students interested in such careers.
